[Abstract]
On April 9, 2026, I observed the horticultural variety Fuchsia ‘Angel Earrings Dual Pearl’ at the Conservatory of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Using this observation as a starting point, this paper organizes the inherent ecological characteristics of the genus Fuchsia, particularly its adaptation as a plant of humid mountain forest edges and the positioning of its bird-pollinated flower morphology. Furthermore, I examine the process by which Fuchsia was introduced to Japan via European horticultural history, faced the problem of incompatibility with hot and humid environments, and was reconstructed through horticultural breeding. Building on this, I reframe the Fuchsia exhibition at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens not merely as a seasonal display, but as an institutional practice where plant ecology and human management intersect.
